Today, the Member of Parliament, Sir Oliver Dowden MP raised the issue of houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) in Potters Bar and Borehamwood during Prime Minister’s Questions.
Addressing Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner MP, Sir Oliver expressed the increasing frustration of local residents who fear the character of their neighbourhoods is being fundamentally altered by the proliferation of HMO developments. These conversions, often made without adequate community consultation, have led to increased pressure on local infrastructure, growing incidents of anti-social behaviour, and serious parking issues in once-quiet, family-friendly streets such as Tiverton Road and Organ Hall Road.
Sir Oliver said: “It is a pleasure to be asking the Right Honourable Lady a question at Prime Minister’s Questions, although this time, just the one.”
He added: “There has been a proliferation of houses of multiple occupation in my constituency, in places like Potters Bar and Borehamwood. Quiet, residential streets, like Tiverton Road and Organ Hall Road, are being blighted by quiet family houses being converted into houses of multiple occupation, leading to a surge in anti-social behaviour, and parking problems.
May I therefore urge the Deputy Prime Ministers to look at enhancing the powers of local councils to stop these kinds of developments where they are not wanted.”
