Oliver's New Year Q&A for My News

Monday, 20 December, 2021

What have you learned from 2021 that you're bringing into 2022?

2021 has been another challenging year for all of us as we’ve continued the battle against Covid. I’ve certainly learned to cherish what we have, especially family and friends. I’ve also learned to make the most of the time that I have both as an MP and Minister to serve the public.

What are you most excited for this year?

I’m excited about the fantastic jobs and opportunities, particularly for young people, that will be created as projects such as the Sky Elstree studios open. I’m also hoping that we get to have some more fun next year and am excited about all the events being planned to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee - marking 70 years of tireless public service.

What do you anticipate will be your biggest challenge?

I am very concerned about the pressure that is being put on our green open spaces by development pressure. I’m determined to continue my campaign to get the Housing Department to look again at its approach to Hertsmere. There should be more recognition of that fact that almost all the borough’s undeveloped land is green belt meaning it is exceptionally hard for us to meet high targets for new building. There needs to be a greater emphasis on beauty and protecting the environment, getting infrastructure in place and respecting local democracy.  I continue to engage the Housing Secretary on all these points.

We also need to continue to get investment into our NHS as it faces the enormous challenges of Covid. I will be making the case for our area to get its fare share of new resources, including for our hard pressed GPs.

Come the end of this year, what will you hope to have achieved?

I want a fairer deal for residents on housing numbers and progress on GP and school places for local residents. I’d also like to spend some more time with my family, other public duties permitting!

As always, please do get in touch with me at oliver@oliverdowden.com.

Defending our Countryside

One of the great pleasures of living in our part of Hertfordshire is the countryside we have right on our doorstep. I grew up enjoying the green fields around Radlett and love the space and freedom it provides. It makes our towns and villages distinct and special places to live.
