Sir Oliver has contributed to the discussion on the threat from Iran.
Sir Oliver said: 'Thank you, Madam Deputy Speaker. The Home Secretary rightly says that the threats from hostile states are complex and intertwined. Can she therefore, update the House on what further steps the government has taken to protect critical national infrastructure, particularly from cyber attacks? Moreover, our security services, commit vast, amounts of expertise in our protection. Their successes have to be hidden, but their failures are often picked over. What the one thing they really do need is additional resources. Can I urge the Home Secretary to make the case vigorously for them, during the forthcoming spending review? That's the least they deserve from this House.'
The Home Secretary responded: 'I thank the Honourable Member for his question. I know that this is an issue he took immensely seriously when he was in government, including the issues around, critical national infrastructure. I agree with him with the importance of that, and the implications in terms of cyber attacks. And I know he will also agree that the critical national infrastructure we have is actually changing. What is now critical is different from what might have been the critical national infrastructure even ten years ago, let alone twenty or thirty years ago. And so, therefore, we need to have the processes to be able to adapt swiftly, and that will be, considered as part of the national security review. And, he will he can be assured that I will strongly, always argue for support for our intelligence and security agencies.'
