As a new Parliamentary session begins and with the advent of a new Prime Minister, my primary duty of standing up for the people of Hertsmere remains unchanged.
First, congratulations to all local students receiving their GCSE and A-Level results. I wish you every success in your next steps.
Returning to Parliament, my focus remains squarely on our community’s priorities.
Preserving our rural character is paramount. Resisting large-scale Green Belt development has been made significantly harder following the Government’s decision to place Hertsmere’s planning department into special measures. Combined with Labour’s unrealistic top-down housing targets and its "grey belt" redesignations, our countryside faces unprecedented pressure. I continue to work with residents to protect our green spaces.
As Hertsmere’s Member of Parliament, I am proud to represent one of the largest Jewish communities in the country, with which I engage extremely closely. Sadly, locally we have acutely felt the rise in antisemitism seen in recent times. Whether it is abuse online, hostility on our streets, or attempts to excuse or minimise antisemitism in public life, many Jewish residents have told me of their growing concerns for their families and communities. My message remains simple: no one in Bushey/ Radlett should ever feel unsafe because of their faith or background, whether they are Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Christian or any of the other faiths in our community. I will continue to stand proudly with our Jewish community, challenge antisemitism wherever it arises, and work to ensure that Bushey/ Radlett remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.
Finally, championing our vibrant local economy remains vital. These businesses create jobs, invest in our communities and help make Bushey/ Radlett a great place to live and work. As I meet with business owners across the constituency to hear about the opportunities and challenges they face, recurring concerns include the growing pressure from rising costs, increasing business rates and higher tax burdens. I am working closely with businesses across Hertsmere and fighting for a business environment that supports growth, investment and job creation.
Over the coming months, I will continue to champion the issues that matter most to local residents, hold the Government to account, and ensure Hertsmere's voice is heard on the national stage.
