As Hertsmere’s Member of Parliament, I have always worked to ensure that our transport network is safe, reliable and fit for purpose. Whether securing Oyster to Radlett, delivering new modern carriages on Thameslink, or pushing for an end to disruptive road works, my priority has always been to stand up for local people and the services they depend upon.
We have just marked Road Safety Week, which is an annual event organised to raise awareness about road safety issues, promote safe driving and support those affected by road crashes.
Road safety is an issue that matters deeply to our community, and I know from my conversations with residents that concerns about speeding and dangerous driving are not abstract; they affect daily lives.
Readers of Radlett News will have seen the terrible impact that unsafe driving has had on Radlett resident, Alison Reeves, who was involved in a collision with a van earlier this year outside her home near the roundabout at Watling Street and Park Road. She suffered from a number of serious injuries, spending six weeks in hospital but thankfully is continuing her long-term recovery.
I was particularly moved to learn about her awful experience and contacted her, offering my support for her campaign to improve road safety in the area.
I recently visited Mrs Reeves to witness for myself the problems at the junction. Following this, I have engaged with Hertfordshire County Council to press for solutions and will continue to assist Mrs Reeves in her campaign to help prevent potential future incidents in the village. Any accident on our roads is one too many. I believe we owe it to Mrs Reeves, and to residents across Radlett and beyond, to keep fighting for a safer transport network and a safer community for everyone.
