As the school summer holidays approach, many young people across Hertsmere are looking forward to a well-earned break after completing their GCSEs and A-Levels.
For many 16-year-olds in our local Jewish community, summer also marks an important rite of passage - the opportunity to travel to Israel for much-loved milestone events, such as attending the summer youth tours, or participating in the 2026 Maccabiah Games. The summer youth tours provide a unique opportunity for more than 1500 Jewish children around the UK to come together and deepen their understanding of their Jewish heritage, culture and history. Similarly, those chosen to represent their country at the Maccabiah Game are giving the opportunity to celebrate their sporting endeavours with likeminded athletes.
In recent weeks, many constituents have contacted me with their concerns that the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) were continuing to advise against “all travel” to Israel. With the prospect of these trips being cancelled, families were facing an incredibly difficult situation. Not only are these trips a significant financial commitment, but this generation of students have already faced considerable disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic and were therefore understandably anxious they may miss out on even more life milestones. On top of this, the appalling attacks we have seen against the Jewish community in the past few months has made these summer events even more important, providing an opportunity for Jewish children to come together.
I raised these concerns directly with the FCDO, and I am pleased that updated travel advice has now been issued and that the FCDO no longer advises against “all travel” to Israel. The clearer guidance will be welcome news for families, schools and youth organisations planning these valuable educational and cultural trips.
Whilst it remains essential for travellers to stay informed and follow the latest official advice, this update provides much-needed clarity for those making summer plans. I wish everyone travelling to Israel this summer a safe and enjoyable trip!
