In Bushey, we are fortunate to have a fantastic range of small businesses, which make up an important part of our high street and form the backbone of our local economy.
These businesses build something that not only supports the business owners, who put their careers, their income and often their homes on the line, but also our wider community through the jobs and wealth they create.
I am determined to encourage and support this in Hertsmere, which has a vibrant and growing economy.
That is why I was deeply concerned over the decision taken by the Labour-Liberal Democrat run council to impose parking charges at Kemp Place Car Park. They have recently increased the price from £1.10 for the first hour to £1.15.
Kemp Place used to provide parking free of charge for the first hour, allowing residents to park near the high street and pop into retailers to buy quick essentials or pick up prescriptions.
This is an unnecessary financial burden that is driving people away from our valued high streets. We should be encouraging residents to visit the high street, not deterring them.
I recently convened a meeting with local business owners who have been negatively affected by the parking charges. Along with Cllr Paul Morris, I heard from local businesses themselves about how the removal of free parking has led to a drop in footfall on the high street, which has led to a fall in revenue.
I am compiling evidence from local businesses about the impact these charges are causing and will be taking this up with the council again to push for the removal of the fees. I also intend to raise it in Parliament.
If you have been impacted by the parking charges, then I would be grateful if you could email me at [email protected].
