The Member of Parliament, the Rt Hon Sir Oliver Dowden KCB CBE has today spoken in Parliament against Labour’s broken promises that could put thousands of teachers’ jobs at risk up and down the country.
Hard-working teachers in Hertsmere could now face job losses as Labour once again attack schools as they cope with pressure on places, and unfunded increases to National Insurance.
Without government funding to compensate this pay rise, schools will be left to face a shortfall of £800 million this year. Over two thousand hard-working teachers in the South East, including Hertsmere, now see their jobs at risk following this latest attack on schools.
Sir Oliver questioned Education Minister, Catherine McKinnell MP, asking:‘Mr Speaker, I do have some sympathy for the Honorable Lady who I have a great deal of respect for. But surely, she must feel embarrassed coming before this house knowing all the answers to these questions and not giving them simply because Number 10 won't let her.
In my constituency, schools are already facing a double whammy from, not fully funded, increase in cost from national insurance rise and the pressure on places.
Now if this teacher's pay settlement isn't funded in full, surely, she would admit this amounts to a cut. Whenever this happened when we were in government, the first thing they would say would be, are you matching it with funding? If you're not, they would scream for blue murder that it amounted to a cut. Will she just admit that if it's not funded, it is a cut to schools?’
