Oliver Calls for Urgent Action on Uncontrolled HMO Conversions in Hertsmere

Sir Oliver Dowden MP met with Shadow Housing Secretary Sir James Cleverly MP, Leader of the Conservative Group at Hertsmere Borough Council, Cllr Lynette Sullivan, and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group at Hertsmere Borough Council, Cllr Harvey Cohen, to highlight the growing impact of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) on local neighbourhoods in Potters Bar, Borehamwood, and across Hertsmere.

During the meeting, Oliver and Cllrs Sullivan and Cohen outlined concerns over single-family residential homes being converted into large, 8-to-10-bedroom HMOs, fundamentally changing the character of established residential areas and placing severe strain on local infrastructure and services.

The Conservatives outlined a commitment to protect family homes, preserve local neighbourhood character, and give local councils stronger planning powers to prevent inappropriate conversions.

Sir Oliver said: "The character of towns like Potters Bar and Borehamwood is being destroyed by the mass conversion of family homes into HMOs, which are totally unsuitable for our area. We are standing together with residents to demand real action to protect our local communities.”
